Children Walking Tall is always on the look out for people who would like to volunteer to help either in the UK or GOA.

 Volunteering In India

Location : Near Mapusa, North Goa
Accommodation : Most volunteers stay around the beach area in Goa, near Anjuna, Calangute or Candolim. (Accommodation costs between £75 and £200 per month (depending on the season))
Travel : "The Mango House" is around 20 minutes away from Calangute ( By Taxi / Bike ), A Bus will cost around 25p return to the beach area. Some volunteers hire mopeds/bikes, we recommend a valid International driving licence and Insurance for this.
Hours : Mon to Friday (5.5 Hours per day) - (9:30 - 3:00) or (12:30 - 18:00)
Requirements : Recent Police Check
     

Child Care Assistant

We are always in need of Child care assistants who will make sure the children who come to our centers are looked after so that they can play safely and enjoy their time at the center. We have a wide range of games, books and activities to do but new ideas are always welcome. Generating or Bringing new resources is also very welcome.

 

Teacher

We require teachers to provide extra help to the children who attend schools and to teach informally the children who attend the center. We generally teach the children in English as very few of our volunteers speak Hindi, although this is obviously a help in teaching. Any school homework is done in the afternoons after they leave school. We are also interested in other practical and creative lessons which would add to the children's knowledge. As well as teaching at the center we are hoping to start our outreach work in the slums once we have the resources to do so. We have a wide range of games, books and activities to help this but new ideas are always welcome. Generating or Bringing new resources is also very welcome.

     

Out Reach Workers

The first priority is providing coverage for the center where we help most children each day. But additionally to this there will be chance to teach in the slums, visit the slums to provide health care, fruit and rice runs, and to give out clothes.

Distributing clothes and other items can be difficult as the children and parents regularly get too excited and will not wait in line. When this happens It might seem impossible but you will learn the skills to make it effective.

  

Doctors / Nurses

Doctors are so important in the work we do as the children regularly have problems requiring medical help, this can range from simple cuts to raging temperatures. Scabies, bad chests, breathing problems and conjunctivitis are common place. As well as providing help to relieve symptoms, it is also important to educate the children about how to prevent these these and other conditions. This would take place in the center and also the slums.
     

Maintenance and Gardening

The Mango House is an old Portuguese house that still requires a lot of work. There is still plenty of items to do including improvements to the roof, cement work, designing and making of benches and shelving. In the garden we are hoping to produce different areas to keep chickens, a vegetable garden and also outside play equipment. The garden is always in need of weeding and work. The house has a huge plot that has a forest area and an already partly cleaned area. Both require work to improve these for the children.

  

Art, Yoga, Music, Karate, etc

We hope to encourage the children to be creative and expressive, with this in mind we would appreciate volunteers who can expand the options available to the children by providing different activities like Art projects, Yoga lessons etc. Many resources are available in India but might be difficult to obtain, so please contact us with your ideas before hand if any resources are required.
