Children Walking Tall is always on the look out for people who would like to volunteer to help either in the UK or GOA.

Location : Goa, India, Near Mapusa

Travel : "The Mango House" is around 20 minutes away from Calangute ( By Taxi / Bike ), A Bus will cost around 25p return to the beach area. Some volunteers hire mopeds/bikes, we recommend a valid International driving licence and Insurance for this.
Hours : Mon to Friday (5.5 Hours per day) - (9:30 - 3:00) or (12:30 - 18:00) during times when there are 5 or less volunteers we might request volunteers to start at 10:00 and finish at 6:00. *Please see timetable below
Requirements : Recent Police Check, £50 Deposit returnable on request after completing the minimum 3 months

You must be prepared to carry out a wide range of duties. These include :

Child Care Assistant   Teacher
Darian Volunteer Child CareThe children who come to the Mango House need to be supervised and entertained. We have a good selection of craft materials and games as well as children’s books, but new ideas and materials are always welcome. We need volunteers who have the creativity, energy, and maturity to make sure the children can play and learn safely and enjoy their time at the Mango House.   Melanie Volunteer TeacherThe younger children (aged between three and seven) attend the Mango House in the morning and are given basic lessons in English, maths, and science, as well as some craft, games, and story-time. Volunteers need to plan these structured activities in advance. The older children (up to age fourteen) go to school in the morning and attend house in the afternoon. A member of staff gives informal English lessons and the volunteers provide support. Volunteers also run craft and games sessions in the afternoons.

Out Reach Workers   Doctors / Nurses
Matt Volunteer Out Reach WorkerMost volunteers’ time will be spent at the Mango House, but a daily trip to the slums to distribute fruit and check on other slum children is carried out. We also give out clothes, shoes, and toothbrushes, and provide advice to children and parents from time to time. Volunteers are required to help with this and will always be accompanied by a member of staff.   Volunteer Doctor, Volunteer Nurse

Cuts and scrapes, high temperatures, coughs and breathing problems, and so on are quite common with the children, so volunteers need to be able to provide treatment and educate the children to prevent further problems. Scabies and conjunctivitis are also common and need to be treated on a daily basis. This work takes place both at the house and in the slums. And unfortunately we occasionally get more serious cases like broken bones, severe burns, and diseases like impetigo, so knowledge of first aid is very useful.

Any qualified doctors and nurses are also encouraged to volunteer and we are happy to discuss the different requirements these volunteers may have.

Maintenance and Gardening   Art, Yoga, Music, Karate, etc
Volunteer Building, Maintance & GardeningThe Mango House is now set up and well used, but does require constant maintenance. Roof repairs, painting, cement work, guttering, gardening, carpentry, etc are needed from time to time and any volunteers that can help with this work are appreciated. Also, volunteers must be prepared to mop floors, wash tiles, clean sinks, and generally maintain the high standard of cleanliness throughout the house.   Volunteer Art, Yoga and Karate Instructors

We hope to encourage the children to be creative and expressive, with this in mind we would appreciate volunteers who can expand the options available to the children by providing different activities like Art projects, Yoga lessons etc. Many resources are available in India but might be difficult to obtain, so please contact us with your ideas before hand if any resources are required.

And Finally...

Of course the most important thing for any volunteer is a desire to spend time with children to improve their lives. Volunteering is hard work, but it is also incredibly good fun and very rewarding. If any of the above listed activities particularly appeal to you, or there is anything you would not like to be (or feel unable to be) involved in, please provide details on your application form.
