« Mumbai Trip 1 »

At Christmas we gave out over 550 presents in the North of Goa. However we felt that it would also be nice to visit Mumbai and give out gifts to some of the children in the slums there. Shermina and five volunteers traveled to Mumbai on the night bus, spent a few hours in Mumbai and then traveled back by night bus. The trip lasted 36 hours altogether and we gave out 605 bags of goodies to the children. Each bag contained a set of clothes and a toy. To see the children's faces when we gave them the gifts was fantastic as they were all so happy even though it was only something very small!! These photos show our trip and some of the children that we saw. Follow the lines for the journey that Shermina and the volunteers took from Goa to Mumbai, put the cursor over each picture for a description and click the images to see larger versions.
We took 9 large bags and 5 rucksacks full of clothes and toys
Saku and Sitaly helped us pack the taxi's
Waiting at the bus stand in Mapusa for the bus to come
We took the night bus to Mumbai
Sunil had to get all the luggage off the roof of the bus
Once off the bus we sat at the side of the road and organised ourselves
We then transported our bags in two taxi's
The slum was situated on both sides of a busy highway
The children soon realised why we were there and came to greet us
Sunil tried to organise everyone into a line
The children were of all ages and nobody cared about the busy road
Everybody was eager to find out what we had to give them
People started to make a line but everybody was pushing to get to the front.
We opened the bags but then realised that we needed a new plan
We decided to move all of our belongings to a safe area
Some of the local men helped us carry everything but our volunteers had to do some of the heavy lifting too!
The locals moved all of our belongings into a store area until we managed to get all the children organised.
Eventually everybody returned to their homes and we visited each hut seperately.
This little boy was eating his lunch at the side of the road.
All of the adults wanted to thank us and shake our hands.
Each gift was labeled with an age so that it was easier to give everything out
Everybody wanted to help
The parents brought all the babies to see us
All the family enjoyed getting presents and were full of big smiles
Everyone wanted to thank us.
At one stage we had so many people helping us that we didn't know what we were doing!
Most of the children sat and waited patiently
Some wondered who we were
Shermina helped carry the bags much to the locals suprise.
At some of the houses we were greated by up to 15 people
We were amazed that nobody got hurt on the busy road
Some of the families looked at us in bemusment as we walked around from house to house
Whole families came out to see us
Some of the children's faces told us everything
This boy put his clothes on straight away and was proud to be wearing them
These two children had been asking for clothes all day - eventually they got them and were so happy running down the road
This mother was trying to breast feed her baby while all the traffic was whizzing by
Some of the families only had a plastic sheet to cover them
The children were so excited that they had to put on their clothes on straight away
Everyone was proud of their new clothes
People came from all directions to try and get presents
Parents liked to see the children with their new clothes
It didn't matter to the chilren that it was only a small gift... they appriciated anything
All our volunteers experienced a range of emotions when they saw the children
