« The Mango House »

The Mango House was a big project for us, please see the photos below to see what we did to make it into an atractive home for children, please click on the photos for larger pictures.

Before

After

Outside View

The painting of the outside was one of the last items to be done to the house, we were lucky to have 'The Goan Dentist' who managed all the outside paintwork free of charge to CWT.

The Kitchen

As you can see from the picture, the original kitchen was somewhat primitive, the cookerconsisted of a couple of bricks that held a fire made from sticks that were kept in the holes underneath the work surface.

Wall Cupboards

Scattered around the house are wall cupboards which are original features of the house, as you can see from the first picture they were in disrepair, but thanks to the volunteers and a lot of sanding (no electric sander used) and a lick of varnish they look a treat.

The School and Play Room

was full of old furniture when we took over the house, most of it now is kept safely out of the way of the children. The room has been transformed into a bright colourful room with lots of pictures on the walls.

The Mango Tree and Garden

The garden was hugely overgrown throughout the monsoon, it took a lot of time and effort to clear the area so that it was fit for the children to play in.

Dining room

The dining room was caked with dust and old tools that had been stored at the house, many of the items were antiques but had been eaten away by termites over the 20 years that the house had been empty. Days were spent on hands and knees scrubbing the floors to make them shine.

Most of the Windows

Throughout the house had been broken or had fallen out completely, the picture on the left shows them after being cleaned and painted (we don't have an original photo) but they were then improved more after the monsoon to go inline with the white blue paint scheme.

The Kitchen

Originally only had the one tap, in fact it was the only tap in the whole house. If it was going to work as a children's home then proper plumbing would have to be installed. We now have multiple taps, toilets and showers to enable us to keep the house and the children clean.

The Dining room

The dining room was a complete mess after the roof tiles had been relaid, after cleaning Rob, Shermina and lots of volunteers and visitors spent hours drawing and painting the cartoon characters on the walls, it is now home to the full alphabet (with pictures) and lots more.

The Front Garden

The Garden was pretty much a jungle after the monsoon, Robert cleared most of the 6ft weeds (with the help of Kurian). Kim (Gardening Manager) and helpers then created a clean safe flat area for the children to play in. It also has 6 veg plots at the end where onions, potatoes, Garlic etc grow.

The Store Room

The Store room was the darkest, dirties room in the house and originally had a 'cow pat' floor. The room was emptied, cleaned and the old floor removed, the builders then laid a new red cement floor to tie in with the other rooms in the house.

The Kitchen

The kitchen used to connect to the bathroom, but we didn't think this would be very hygienic so we bricked the door and transferred it to the next room. The rest of the kitchen required lots of paint to cover the badly smoke stained walls.

The Roof

was one of the first things done at The Mango House. it was in a terrible state when we first arrived at the house and we soon realised that it would rain just as hard inside as it would outside during the monsoon if it wasn't repaired. New battens and tiles were used and every tile relaid to keep the rain at bay.

The Play and School room

The play and school room has lots of toys for the children to play with and also a blackboard and magnetic letter board so they can practice their spellings. The room has a jungle theme with Tarzan, Jungle book and Lion King characters on the walls.
